Why is Clean Beauty Important to me?

I believe that when trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle being cognizant of what you put on your body is just as important as what you put in your body.  When I was 17, I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis.

Hashimoto’s is an autoimmune disorder and it causes your immune system to attack the thyroid gland. When this occurs the thyroid becomes under active and no longer produces the amount of hormone needed to function properly. This disease has what seems like an endless list of symptoms and I unfortunately have experienced most of them. This can include fatigue, unexplained weight gain, depression, loss of hair, brain fog, sensitivity to cold, and muscle weakness.  According to the American Thyroid Association, an estimated 20 million Americans have some form of thyroid disease. Women are five to eight times more likely to have problems with their thyroid than men and 60% of those with thyroid disease are unaware that they have it. They also say the causes of thyroid problems are largely unknown. Well, I have a theory.

A few years after being diagnosed I started paying more attention to the products I was using, but recently I’ve been diving deeper and educating myself on the different ingredients used in make up and skin care products.  For example, parabens. These are commonly used as preservatives in beauty and pharmaceutical products. They are known to be disrupters of the endocrine system by mimicking the effects of estrogen in the body. Your thyroid is part of that system and knowing the challenges I’ve experienced with hypothyroidism I don’t want to make it worse. 

I am still learning about thyroid disease and how it affects me daily. I’m still learning about different ingredients and what I’m comfortable and not comfortable using. I hope my experiences inspire you to learn more about clean beauty and through my thoughts and reviews help you find alternative products that are non toxic and effective.
